FAST Screenplay

Philosophy

The thinking behind FAST

FAST rests on three convictions: creativity is a trainable process, not a talent lottery; process beats formula; and in the age of AI, the human voice has become the rarest — and therefore most valuable — material in the room.

Process over formula

Screenwriting education has mostly been story-driven: analyze great scripts, learn what to put where, apply the template. But not every idea fits the same structure. FAST was built the other way around — a start-to-finish process flexible enough to develop any idea to professional viability. The methodology is about the journey from idea to finished work, not a prescribed destination format.

Action over thought

You can't learn creativity by thinking about it. Reading about writing doesn't make you a writer; thinking about your story doesn't externalize it. Creative intuition is built through repeated action — each time you focus fragments into a plan, put a plan on the page, strengthen weak work, and polish for reception, the skill becomes more automatic. FAST is deliberately experiential for exactly this reason.

The bottleneck was never your imagination

Ideas arrive in the shower, on the walk, the second before sleep — and they cool on the way down. Formatting, lost notes, scattered context, the dread of the blank page. That gap between what was alive in your head and what survives on paper is where most screenplays die. It is not a talent gap; it is an apparatus gap. FAST exists to close it: fast doesn't mean rushed — fast means unobstructed. The hard parts of writing stay. The furniture you trip over does not.

The human voice, in the age of AI

AI can flood the world with competent, familiar-sounding scripts. What it cannot do is live your life and put that weight on the page. As generated material multiplies, a story that could only have come from one specific human stops being merely good — it stands out. The opportunity for writers is not to compete with AI on volume, but to become more fluent human storytellers while human voice becomes the scarce asset. That is why FAST uses technology to remove friction and protect privacy — and never to generate the writer's story.

Why screenwriting, of all forms

A picture is worth a thousand words — and what screenwriters write are pictures. Screenwriting exercises the imagination in ways almost no other writing does, because it works several layers at once: the story itself; the story told so that it fires the imaginations of the creative collaborators who must build the film as a team; the financial layer — a story that can plausibly be produced within its budget; and the sparsity of the page — maximum impact in the fewest possible words, saying on the page what is never said out loud. Master that, and you've trained a creative muscle that transfers everywhere.

The process is universal

Because FAST teaches process rather than formula, its four phases turn out not to be about screenplays at all — they're how anything moves from random idea to finished work. Focus, Apply, Strengthen, Tweak is the shape of creative work in every form. That's why what began as screenwriting education keeps expanding: founder Jeff Bollow's 2015 TEDx talk, Expand Your Imagination Exponentially, makes the case that imagination is trainable — in any field.

The mission

Expand intuitive human creativity. Every person carries a perspective — shaped by DNA, experience, and circumstance — that no one else will ever have. Creativity is how that lens gets shared. When someone externalizes their creative vision, everyone's view of what's possible gets wider. More creativity means a richer human experience for everyone. FAST is one engine for that — not the only path, but an effective one.
